Walter James Watson was born 21 Aug 1877 in Seacombe, Cheshire, England. He was part of the Watson family of artists and was the son of William Watson Jnr (1847-1921) and grandson of William Watson Snr. 1809-1871. His brothers William and Sidney and sisters Caroline Ellen and Rosa, also became artists.
He studied at the Wallasey School of Art as well as in London and started exhibiting from 1910. He exhibited 32 works at the Royal Cambrian Academy as well as paintings at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He also exhibited at the major London galleries as well as in the provinces and abroad. Watson was elected an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1922. During his lifetime, he lived in North Wales and Hastings. He died 23 July 1963 in Gwern-Y-Brenin, Oswestry, England.
The work is housed in its original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
