Joseph Thors was a landscape painter who worked in London but also painted in the Midlands. His landscapes are mainly of figures, animals and rustic cottages set against a backdrop of trees or woodlands. Thors was considered a member of the Birmingham school and his style is similar to that of the Norwich school, both of whose aims were to achieve naturalistic landscape painting. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institute and Suffolk Street between 1863 and 1900. Thors painted his landscapes with great care and attention to every detail from the figures on the winding paths to the leaves on the trees, which has helped make his works enduringly popular amongst collectors. The work is housed in a new, English made frame which is in excellent condition.
