Erwin Eichinger

Austrian (1892-1950)
The Pipe
Oil on board, signed

A finely painted portrait of a Bavarian man with a pipe by Erwin Eichinger. The man, who is depicted wearing traditional Upper Bavarian costume, is shown holding a carved wood and buck horn antler hunters pipe.

Erwin Eichinger was a genre and figurative painter who lived in the early 20th-century in Vienna. He was the father of Otto Eichinger (1922-2004) who he is believed to have taught, as their artistic styles and subject matter are similar. He painted finely detailed scenes of Bavarian men and Cardinals at leisure, usually reading, smoking a pipe or drinking a glass of wine, but also painted a number of historical scenes with figures in historical costumes. Eichinger died in Vienna in 1950.
