Adolphus Knell was a marine painter who flourished during the latter part of the 19th century. His work has become widely collected due to the fact he was quite prolific and the quality of his work remained high. It is widely accepted that he was the brother of William Callcott Knell and the son of William Adolphus Knell, both of whom were highly regarded marine painters. He lived in Bristol and was originally a furniture decorator in Bath before becoming an artist. Knell often painted on a small scale as in this fine example.
The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frames which is in excellent condition.
