Jonxis was born on the 5th October 1815 in Utrecht, Holland. He was the son of Jan Lodewijk Jonxis (1789-1867) a skilled draftsman and painter of landscapes and grandson of Pieter Hendrik Jonxis (1757-1843) an engraver. He was taught by his father who influenced his work, producing summer and winter landscapes as well as moonlight scenes in both oils and watercolour. From 1841, Hendrik lived in Groningen painting views of the town and canals. In 1847 he left Holland for Belgium, settling in Brussels where he continued to paint townscapes and landscapes. He died in Brussels on 17th June 1852.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
