Alfred Bentley was born in 1879 the youngest son of Captain WE Bentley FRGS. He studied at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington and was taught etching and engraving by Sir Frank Short. There he met his lifelong friend Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963) with whom he shared a studio and went on painting and etching tours to France. He became a recognised artist and was elected an Associate of the Royal Engravers in 1908, becoming a full member in 1913. He was also awarded Associate of the Royal College of Art (ARCA London). Bentley exhibited at the principal galleries in England and abroad including the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. In April 1915, he joined the Artists’ Rifles and was gazetted to the Norfolk Regiment. During World War I, he sustained injuries whilst serving in France and was awarded the MC. Although he returned home, he never fully recovered and died on 18 February 1923 as a result of complications due to his wounds. His works can be found in a number of museums and art galleries including The Ashmolean, British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.
