Harry Sutton Palmer

Harry Sutton Palmer was a well known landscape painter born in Plymouth in March 1854. He studied at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington for two years winning a gold medal in his second year. From the age of twenty, he turned from still life to the rural idylls and river landscapes in watercolour for which he has become best known. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1870 with a total of 33 works. From 1880, Palmer held a number of one-man shows in London and New York. He also exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Dowdeswell Galleries and Leicester Gallery. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1892 and was elected RI in 1920. He lived in London and travelled widely, painting views of Surrey, Berkshire, Derbyshire, the Lake District, Yorkshire and many parts of Scotland. He also produced illustrations for a number of books. Palmer died on 8 May 1933. A number of his works can be found in private collections and art galleries including the V&A, Leek Art Gallery and Wardown Park Museum.
