Arthur Alfred Burrington The Card Players, Algiers Arthur Burrington was a painter of figures, genre and domestic scenes. He was born at Bridgwater, Somerset and studied at the South Kensington Schools and the Slade School. He also studied abroad in Rome under Cipriani in 1878, and in Paris in 1882. He exhibited from 1880 in London, at the Royal Academy (1888-1918), Suffolk Street (from 1883), New Gallery, Royal Institute and elsewhere and was elected member of the RI in 1896. He lived in the West of England for a time and exhibited at the RWA. He also lived in the South of France. Burrington painted in an impressionistic style similar to that of the Newlyn School. Like many of his contemporary's Burrington was fascinated by the play of light on buildings and people, and his works are often well lit with contrasting shadows as in this fine example. A number of his works can be found in the Victoria Art Gallery and Bath Art Gallery. sold |
