Edward Angelo Goodall was renowned landscape, topographical and oriental artist who was born in London on 8 June 1819. He was the eldest son of Edward Goodall (1794-1870) the engraver and brother to the artists Frederick Goodall (1822-1904), Walter Goodall (1830-89) and Eliza Goodall (fl.1846-54). At the age of 17, after serving an apprenticeship at his father's office, he started producing a number of watercolours including 'The Landing of the Lord Mayor at Blackfriars Bridge, 1836'. Encouraged by his father's friend Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867) he entered it into the Society of Arts Exhibition, winning a silver medal. In July 1841, he became the Government artist to the Guiana (Guyana, South America) Boundary Expedition under Sir Robert Schomburgk, making a large number of topographical, botanical and ethnological sketches, now kept at the British Library. On his return to England, Goodall took up oil painting and exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1854, he went to Crimea as a war artist for the Illustrated London News. In 1856 he became a member of the Watercolour Society, devoting himself to the medium. In 1870, he went to Egypt, painting many scenes especially the ancient sites. He also travelled to France, Italy, Spain Portugal, Morocco, Gibraltar and Venice. In 1882, he became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society. Goodall was a highly productive artist working right up until his death on April 16 1908. He was buried at Highgate Cemetery.
