James Stephen Gresley

James Stephen Gresley was born in Sandiacre, Derby the first generation of the famous Gresley family of artists. His son Frank Gresley (1855-1936) and grandson Harold Gresley (1892-1967) were both landscape artists and another grandson Cuthbert worked for Royal Crown Derby as a porcelain painter. He lived in Derbyshire at Draycott, Borrowash and Chellaston. He also lived at Bolton Abbey and Ilkley in Yorkshire. Gresley specialised in the rural landscapes of Derbyshire and Yorkshire, painting mainly in watercolour. He also produced illustrations for publications including "All About Derbyshire" a guide book by Edward Bradbury published in 1884. He exhibited in the London galleries as well as those of the North. He died in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1908.
