Edward H Bearne The Old Boat Edward Henry Bearne was a London landscape and rustic genre painter born near Newton Abbott, Devon in 1844. Around 1874, he studied under the Flemish landscape painter Jozef van Luppen in Belgium with his future wife Catherine Mary Charlton (1844-1923) an artist and writer. To complete his education he toured across Europe painting the architecture of the towns and cities as well as the landscapes. In 1890 and 1893, he exhibited at Thomas McLean's Gallery in Haymarket. His exhibition of 1890 included over a hundred views of Switzerland, Dolomites, Florence, Siena, Nuremburg, Ratisbon and Prague. On 1 February 1890 Punch magazine wrote of the exhibition "These pictures are well painted, and, during the gruesome weather, a tiny tour round this sunny gallery is mighty refreshing". Catherine and Edward married in 1882 and together they made a living, with him as an artist her as a writer. Bearne illustrated a number of his wife's books including "Pictures of the Old French Court" and "Queen of Napoleon's Court, the Life Story Désirée Bernadotte". In 1910, the family were living at the High Street, Dunster in Somerset. Bearne died in Somerset in 1914. Price Band: A up to £2,500 |
