British, (1858 - 1921)

On the River Nera, Terni, Italy
Watercolour, pair, both signed
5 inches x 7.5 inches

Charles Edmund Rowbotham was a London landscape painter born in 1858. He was the eldest son of Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham NWS (1823-1875) a marine and landscape artist, and began his career painting the figures in his father's compositions. Like his father, he painted landscapes mainly in watercolour, particularly of views on the Riviera and Italian lakes. Rowbotham's works are instantly recognisable, with his use of white heightening and vivid blues. He exhibited from 1877, and lived in Shepherd's Bush and Acton until 1888 when he moved to Steyning, Sussex. From 1899, he lived in Brighton and from 1913 lived in Croydon until his death in 1921. Examples of his works can be found in the National Museum of Wales and the Portsmouth City Museum.
