Charles James Adams was a landscape, animal and genre painter who was born in Gravesend, Kent. He studied at Leicester School of Art and was a pupil of W Pilsbury. He won the Mulready gold medal for life drawing and later became a tutor at the school. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Oil, Royal Society of British Artists and New Watercolour Society and elsewhere from 1881 - 1919. During his life he lived in London, Leicester, Midhurst 1901, Guildford 1904 and Farnham in 1905. Early on in his career, he produced a number of lithographs; however it is for his watercolours and oils of animals in rural landscapes that he is perhaps best known.
