Moritz Stifter Spoilt for Choice Moritz Stifter was a genre and still life painter who was born on 10 November 1857 in Vienna. He was the nephew of Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868) a painter and poet who was born in Czechoslovakia. His grandfather Johann Stifter was a wealthy linen weaver. Stifter became an officer in the army before starting his career as an artist. He studied painting at the Royal Academy in Munich under Professor Karl von Piloty (1826-1886) a German painter of genre and historical scenes and the foremost representative of the realistic school in Germany. Piloty nurtured Stifter's keen observation and natural talent, and soon had him producing works of exceptional quality. In 1884, he became a member of the Vienna "Künstlerhaus" and in 1892 exhibited at the Künsthalle in Bremen. From 1899, he worked in Haag, near Neulengbach in Niederösterreich. He died on 23 May 1905 in Mauer-Oehling. Stifter's scenes are expertly observed and littered with objects of high detail, from the rugs on the floor to the shelves adorned with interesting items.
