Coleman was a London painter of landscapes and figures. He trained as a surgeon before turning to art. He exhibited between 1865-1879 producing landscapes with figures in the manner of M B Foster. During his life he worked for Minton's Art Pottery and designed many tiles and plates for them. Coleman was a keen naturalist and illustrated many books on the subject. Examples of his work are in the V&A, Gundy AG and Blackpool.
