A Set of Regency Quartetto Tables
Attributed to Gillows

A fine quartetto of tables with specimen hardwood tops, attributable to Gillows of Lancaster. The three largest tables have a central veneered panel bordered by contrasting crossbanding and the smallest table is inlaid with a chess board. The tables are supported on ringed, turned bamboo pattern mahogany legs united by stretchers. Specimen timbers in the tops include: burr maple, bird's eye maple, rosewood, West Indian satinwood and birch. A similar set of tables at Leighton House, Lancashire is likely to have been supplied by Gillows circa 1810. In 1822, Richard Gillow bought Leighton House from his cousin Thomas Worsick. See Edwards & M Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet-Makers, revised edition, 1955, p221, fig. 193. C1820.
